I found an injured animal

An injured dog, cat or wild animal in the street: how to help without getting hurt and whom to call.

What to do, step by step

1. 1Assess the risk: an injured animal bites. Approach from the side, slowly, and use a blanket or coat to cover and contain it.
2. 2Dog or cat: take it to a vet (patuco helps you find one nearby); ask them to scan the microchip. If you cannot transport it, call the municipal veterinary service.
3. 3Bird, hedgehog, fox or other wild animal: no food or water, put it in a box with holes in a dark, quiet place, and contact ICNF or a wildlife recovery centre.
4. 4Note the place and time and take a photo: it may be a lost pet — post it in the Lost and found section of patuco.
5. 5Never give human medicines and do not try to treat fractures at home.
